Tmen sit 1-1 after opening weekend

by Dan Marshall

The Nanaimo Timbermen came flying out of the gate with an 11-6 win over the Victoria Shamrocks in their season opener on Friday night.

Charles Claxton was excellent in goal frustrating Shamrocks shooters all night.

Rookie Braylon Lumb and veteran Tyson Roe both contributed two goals in the victory.

Nanaimo didn't have to wait long until their second game of the year, hosting the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Sunday.

The Bellies won 11-9 by breaking a late 9-9 tie.

New West was up 8-4 heading into the third period but the Tmen, led by a three goal and two assist performance from Brody Eastwood, erased the deficit although they couldn't take the two points.

Now the Timbermen have a long layoff with their next game at home against Victoria on Thursday June 6th.

In other news goalie Pete Dubenski has been traded to the Victoria Shamrocks in exchange for a third round draft pick in 2020.

Also on the weekend the Calgary Roughnecks won the NLL Championship over the Buffalo Bandits and there's a Nanaimo Timbermen connection to both teams.

Sean Tyrrell is on the practice roster for the champion Roughnecks and Chase Fraser scored three goals in the final game for the Bandits.

The hope is that both of those players will be making their way to Nanaimo very soon.
