T-Men Play A Rough One

July 14, 2009

On Thursday July 9th, 2009, the New West Salmonbellies hosted the Nanaimo Timbermen at Queens park arena for a 7 o'clock start. The game got off on the wrong foot for the TMEN, giving up the first four goals of the game within the first 6 minutes of the contest before Brad Scott and Shane Pederson helped slim the lead to two goals; Nanaimo then went goal for goal to end the period 6-4 for the home team.

Special teams were deemed to be the Achilles heel for the TMEN giving up three power play goals and one short handed goal during the second period. Shane Pederson got the hat-trick goal on one of Nanaimo's power plays; Nanaimo went 2 for 10 on the power play for the game which could have been the deciding factor. The TMEN went into the locker room for the 2nd intermission down 12-6.

Heading into the final period, Nanaimo knew they had to do something drastic to come out with a victory and John Flatters tried to provide that spark. Flatters took a charging penalty and a fighting major trying to try amp up his team. Within the first five minutes of the period the Timbermen seemed to only have one thing on their mind and that was to physically hurt the opposing team and racked up 29 minutes in penalties. Shane Pederson earned his fourth goal while Cayle Ratcliff getting his first of the night which ended the game in a tie. The main attraction of the night came in the third period. The third period ended up being a gantlet as John Flatters, Bobby Debrone, Kyle McInnes, and Mike Morrison all getting fighting majors with Debrone and Morrison getting the extra 10 minute game misconducts for fighting and spearing. Nanaimo finished the game with 67 penalty minutes. The final score was New West coming out on top 14-8.

The next game for your Nanaimo Senior A Timbermen is Saturday July 11th against the New West Salmonbellies, and after this hard fought battle, you don't want to miss this next and final game between the two teams.
